On occasion Secret Theatre will be a venue for some of this new work. At other times larger numbers of the company will be involved over longer periods of time. All script development is considered for season programming in one way or another.<\/p>\n<p>The Shaw Festival\u2019s first new play was Simon Bradbury\u2019s <em>Chaplin: The Trial of Charles Spencer Chaplin, Esq<\/em>., produced in 2002. That same year, <em>The House of Bernarda Alba<\/em> by Federico Garcia Lorca played in a new translation by Richard Sanger.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, The Shaw has premiered the following plays:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A commissioned translation of Chekhov\u2019s <em>Three Sisters<\/em> by Susan Coyne<\/li>\n<li>Ann-Marie MacDonald\u2019s <em>Belle Moral: A Natural History<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Neil Munro\u2019s adaptation of Henrik Ibsen\u2019s <em>Rosmersholm<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The Invisible Man<\/em>, an adaptation of the novel by H.G. Wells by Michael O\u2019Brien<\/li>\n<li>The world premieres of two musicals, <em>Tristan<\/em> and <em>Maria Severa<\/em>, with book, music and lyrics by Paul Sportelli and Jay Turvey<\/li>\n<li><em>The President<\/em> by Ferenc Moln\u00e1r and adapted by Morwyn Brebner<\/li>\n<li><em>On the Rocks<\/em> by Bernard Shaw and adapted by Michael Healey<\/li>\n<li>An adaptation of Bernard Shaw\u2019s <em>Geneva: Peace in Our Time<\/em> by John Murrell<\/li>\n<li>Henrik Ibsen\u2019s <em>The Lady from the Sea<\/em>, adapted by Erin Shields<\/li>\n<li>The premiere of <em>The Divine: A Play for Sarah Bernhardt<\/em> by Michel Marc Bouchard and translated by Linda Gaboriau<\/li>\n<li><em>Alice in Wonderland<\/em>, adapted for the stage by Peter Hinton from the novel by Lewis Carroll<\/li>\n<li>Lisa Codrington\u2019s adaptation of the GBS short story <em>The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Wilde Tales<\/em>, an adaptation of Oscar Wilde\u2019s stories for young and old by Kate Hennig<\/li>\n<li>Adaptations of the Narnia novels by C.S. Lewis: <em>The Magicians Nephew<\/em> (Michael O\u2019Brien), <em>The Horse and His Boy<\/em> (Anna Chatterton) and <em>Prince Caspian<\/em> (Damien Atkins)<\/li>\n<li><em>A Christmas Carol<\/em>, the Dickens story, adapted by Tim Carroll<\/li>\n<li><em>Mythos<\/em>, adapted from his book, by Stephen Fry<\/li>\n<li><em>The Orchard (After Chekhov)<\/em> by Sarena Parmar<\/li>\n<li><em>Cyrano de Bergerac<\/em>, translated and adapted by Kate Hennig<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Under the artistic directorship of Tim Carroll, the play development focus at The Shaw follows these parameters: we develop translations and adaptations of classic plays \u201cin-house\u201d; we commission new Canadian plays by established playwrights; and last, but not least, we find Canadian plays that may have collected a bit of dust and whose time has come for a full-scale revival, as we did with the 2017 production of <em>1837: The Farmers\u2019 Revolt<\/em> by Rick Salutin and Theatre Passe Muraille, the 2018 production of <em>The Baroness and the Pig<\/em> by Michael McKenzie, and the stellar 2019 production of <em>The Russian Play<\/em> by Hannah Moscovitch.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1995, The Shaw\u2019s publishing initiative has produced scripts, theatrical memoirs and a commemorative book of the Shaw Festival\u2019s Granville Barker series.
